Stand up paddling or beach boy surfing started in Hawaii when native watermen would take photos of tourists surfing. They stood and paddled to keep the camera dry. This soon became an accepted form of surfing, but didn’t become well known until Laird Hamilton started stand up paddling into monster waves. He used it as a cross training tool for all his other surfing adventures and now it is a booming part of the surf industry.
Stand up paddling is a great core work out and is a lot more fun than doing sets of crunches in a gym.
We start beginners in flat water to get the basics down and start to learn how to move the board around, build strength and stamina and create a comfortable awareness and safety on the water. We can stay on the bay side and do serious flat water runs or leisurely explore the marshes and see the wildlife. People even fish off of stand ups. Because the visibility is so good, fly fisherman love them for the silent access to big fish.
We do not recommend stand up surfing for beginners. You need to have some knowledge of surfing to start. These boards are BIG! and can hurt other people and/or yourself when caught in the waves. That being said, stand up surfing is awesome fun and is a killer work out.
When the ocean is moving the balance difficulty goes through the roof. It can look easy, but it isn’t. Everybody needs to start in flat water to learn the basic dynamics. Then we can go into the surf on a small day.
Stand up paddling will double the amount of time you can spend in the water surfing. It will improve your prone surfing by making you stronger, giving you power for critical turns and more balance to land airs and 360’s. You’ll spend more time surfing and less time sitting in the water getting cold. On those small, mushy days, or when the tide is too full for short boards, or even long boards…you can keep surfing, cross step, hang ten and crank big turns on ankle-snappers.
Stand up lessons are $70/hour or $130/ 2hours. Two hours is a good amount of time to get a feel and rhythm going.
Bring a friend and get $120/ 2 hours or book 2 sessions and get them for $120.
Cheers........Gary
